Justin Hakuta is a name that frequently appears in entertainment headlines, primarily as the former husband of comedian and actress Ali Wong. However, the 41-year-old businessman is a distinguished figure in his own right. An entrepreneur, Fulbright Scholar, and Harvard Business School graduate, Hakuta has built a career that spans technology, social enterprise, and wellness, all while navigating the unique challenges of being the supportive partner to one of Hollywood’s most successful comedic stars.
Early Life and Family
Born on October 18, 1981, in Los Angeles, California, Justin Hakuta grew up surrounded by creativity and invention. He is the son of Ken Hakuta, a Japanese-American inventor and TV personality famously known as “Dr. Fad.” Ken Hakuta achieved significant success in the 1980s with the Wacky Wall Walker, a toy that became a massive hit, and he hosted The Dr. Fad Show, a program dedicated to encouraging children’s creativity. His mother, Marilou Cantiller, is of Filipino descent, giving Justin a rich Filipino-Japanese heritage.
Growing up in a family with an entrepreneurial and inventive spirit clearly influenced Hakuta’s future path. He has two siblings, Aki and Kenzo Hakuta.
Education and Academic Excellence
Justin Hakuta’s educational journey is a testament to his intellect and ambition. He began his academic career at the prestigious Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., a school known for educating children of presidents and political elites. Before entering university, he also studied abroad at the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico.
Hakuta then attended Carnegie Mellon University, where he graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Decision Science—a major he helped shape as one of its early pioneers—and a minor in Spanish. His academic excellence earned him a Fulbright Scholarship, which he used to conduct field research in the Philippines. His project focused on studying NGOs combating human trafficking, demonstrating a commitment to social justice early in his career.
He went on to earn a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 2011, cementing his status as a top-tier business mind.
Career and Entrepreneurial Venture
Justin Hakuta’s professional life is defined by a blend of corporate roles and entrepreneurial pursuits. His passion for social impact led him to work with companies in the Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability space, including Honest Tea, Seventh Generation, and Patagonia.
Hakuta co-founded and served as CEO of YogaStart, an online resource for yoga and wellness services, aligning with his and Wong’s shared interest in yoga and meditation. He also co-founded Avacara, a financial technology company.
In the corporate world, Hakuta has held significant roles. Prior to 2019, he worked for GoodRx, the prescription drug price comparison platform, serving as its Vice President of Product. His experience also includes serving as a Senior Product Manager at Cargomatic and as a Product Strategist at DIRECTV.
Personal Life and Relationship with Ali Wong
Justin Hakuta’s personal life garnered public attention through his marriage to comedian Ali Wong. The couple met at a friend’s wedding reception in 2010, and a now-famous story from Wong’s stand-up routine describes how she “trapped” him by refusing to kiss him until the fifth date. They married on November 27, 2014, in San Francisco.
Their marriage and family life became a staple of Wong’s comedy specials. She often joked about their dynamic, including the fact that she was the breadwinner and that his family had her sign a prenuptial agreement before the wedding.
Hakuta was a constant and supportive presence in his wife’s career. While Wong was touring, he often worked her merchandise booth, selling t-shirts and swag to fans. Despite his supportive role, Wong noted he preferred to stay out of the limelight, avoiding red-carpet events to focus on his own work and family.
The couple has two daughters, Mari and Nikki. In April 2022, they announced their separation, and Wong filed for divorce in December 2023, citing irreconcilable differences. Their divorce was finalized in May 2024. Despite the split, both have been vocal about their commitment to co-parenting and maintaining a close, amicable relationship as “best friends.” Wong publicly thanked him for his support during her Golden Globes acceptance speech in January 2024.
Conclusion
Justin Hakuta is more than just a famous ex-husband. He is a successful entrepreneur, a dedicated father, and a man who has carved his own path, from his early days as a Fulbright Scholar focused on social justice to his roles in the tech and wellness industries. His story is one of quiet competence and steadfast support, making him a compelling figure both on and off the stage.
